Your loved one was an environmentalist while alive, but did not leave instructions with respect to his or her burial. You know that burial involves placing items in the earth that will not degrade and compost. Cremation requires enormous energy to consumption and smoke released into the atmosphere before your loved one’s body is reduced to ash. What other option is there?

There are many “green body disposition” options, such as sky burial, mushroom burial suits, aquamation, body farms, green burial, recomposing, and sea burial. There is a new “green burial” option called promession. What is promession, you ask?

Promession is the process of freeze drying the body, much like coffee and other foods. The body is freeze dried using liquid nitrogen and then vibrated until it breaks into particles or dust. The product of promession, or promains, can then be used for fertilizer or as food for birds or fish. The process does not release toxins into the air or use large quantities of energy as does cremation. However, it is important to note that this process is not yet legal in the United States.  It is, however, legal in the United Kingdom, Sweden and South Korea. Efforts are being undertaken to educate countries on the environmental benefits of promession, as well as the cost savings to the departed’s family, to make this method of disposal more widely available.
